Madrid has had a host of identities since men first settled the fortifiable site by the shallow River Manzanares. From Roman waystation and Arab garrison town to the hub of perhaps the most powerful global empire the world has known, and from there to a war-torn wasteland – few other European capitals can claim a past anything like as chequered. Its history is a complex mosaic of peoples and cultures, and its present reflects that complexity.

The Palacio Real is the lavish site of royal events. The Palacio Real is still a fascinating place to walk through though, with its maze of 50 themed rooms decorated in the finest metals and richest fabrics – though this is only a small sampling of the total 2,800 rooms of the palace.

The Museo del Prado – Prado Museum – is considered to house one of the finest art collections in the world. It displays thousands of European paintings, sculptures, and other works of art throughout its halls – and this is only a fraction of their collection!
